To determine which level of CHIP coverage your children may be eligible for, follow the steps below.
- Calculate your current annual family income before deductions. Start by taking your current average gross wages (before deductions). Multiply this amount by the number of times you are paid per year. (Tip: The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania uses 48x if you are paid weekly, and 24x if you are paid biweekly.) Add to this any other income you may have, such as Social Security, child support, workers’ compensation, or profit from self-employment.
- From the total family income calculated in step one, subtract $120 per month (or $1,440 per year) for each parent that is working or self-employed. For working families with day care expenses (for your children or an adult in your household), you should also subtract:
- your actual expenses, up to $200 a month, for children under 2, and/or
- your actual expenses, up to $175 a month, for children 2 or older and/or an adult
- Use the link below to view/download the CHIP income chart. Find your family size in the first column. Your family size includes all immediate family members (mother and/or father and children under 19) living in your household.
- Next, find the columns with your child’s age in the Free and Low-Cost sections of the chart. Where these columns meet the row with your family size, you will find minimum and maximum household incomes. For free or low-cost CHIP eligibility, your family income (calculated in step 2) must fall within the range shown in one of these columns.
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each child in your family.
For any child, if the minimum income shown in the free CHIP column is more than your household income calculated in step 2, your child may be eligible for coverage under the Department of Public Welfare’s (DPW) Medical Assistance program, and your application will be sent to DPW. If your child is eligible for Medical Assistance, he or she cannot be enrolled in CHIP.
